Why Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants school kids to learn coding

NEW YORK: Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey are among the tech luminaries appearing in a new video promoting the teaching and learning of computer coding in schools.


Titled "What most schools don't teach," the video released online begins with Zuckerberg, Gates and other tech icons recalling the time they got their start in coding. For some, that was in sixth grade. For others, such as Ruchi Sanghvi, Facebook's first female engineer, that happened in college. Freshman year, first semester, intro to computer science, to be exact.

Dorsey, who also founded and runs the mobile payments startup Square, said in an interview that he didn't grow up being a programmer.

"I wanted to work on ideas. In order to see them grow, I had to learn how to code," Dorsey told The Associated Press. "I think there is a lack of desire, there is a lack of push to teach people how to program and how to code. It's not all that dissimilar to learning a foreign language. It's just a way to instruct a machine on what to do. It empowers people to start a business, to start a project, to really speak to a daily issue that they are having or other people are having."

Running less than six minutes, the video promotes Code.org, a nonprofit foundation created last year to help computer programming education grow.

"The first time I actually had something come up and say `hello world,' and I made a computer do that, that was just astonishing," Gabe Newell, president of video game studio Valve, recalls in the video.

But it's not just tech leaders promoting programming in the video. Chris Bosh, of the Miami Heat basketball team, says about coding: "I know it can be intimidating, a lot of things are intimidating, but, you know, what isn't?"

Code.org was founded by tech entrepreneur Hadi Partovi, an early investor in Facebook, Dropbox and the vacation rental site Airbnb. The nonprofit wants to address an oft-cited problem among technology companies - not enough computer science graduates to fill a growing number of programming jobs. The group laments that many schools don't even offer classes in programming.

"Our policy is literally to hire as many talented engineers as we can find," Zuckerberg says in the video. "The whole limit of the system is just the there just aren't enough people who are trained and have these skills today."

Ram Leela shoot halted due to mishap on set

Dawn fire kills 20 in Kolkata

Kolkata relived the horrors of the AMRI hospital and Stephen Court fires after a devastating blaze in a wholesale paper and plastic products market in the heart of the city killed at least 20 people on Wednesday.

Thick, black smoke from the pre-dawn fire swirled through two floors of a six-storey building on Surya Sen Street close to Sealdah station in central Kolkata, suffocating traders and shopworkers sleeping in the corridors lined with tens of stalls and small shops stacked high with plastic plates and cutlery, and paper and thermocol products used in weddings or festivals.
The building, which came up in 1995, was illegal, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation had demolished parts of it earlier. It had no fire-fighting equipment and only one entry and exit — a staircase that was filled with smoke. Four people were rescued alive and taken to hospital. One woman was among the dead.

According to police, the Fire Brigade and area residents, the fire started at 3.20 am, probably after a refrigerator burst into flames following an electrical short-circuit. It fed on inflammable material, chemicals and over 50 cooking gas cylinders as it raced through the mezannine and first floors of the building, and burnt for about 10 hours.

The fire comes a little over a year after over 90 people — mostly hospital patients — suffocated following the AMRI blaze of December 2011. Earlier, in March 2010, 43 people died after a fire broke out in the 150-year-old Stephen Court building on Park Street.

No Country for Oscars Winning an Academy Award rarely gives a film a revenue bump in India

In 2008, No Country for Old Men, a film directed by the Coen brothers, Ethan and Joel, won the Best Picture Academy Award. The Academy Awards recognise excellence in films released during the previous year. The film, a dark and absorbing tale about a fortune, a busted drug deal, and a hitman, won three other Oscars: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. With that kind of pedigree, it should have done well at the Indian box office.

Instead, it earned a mere Rs 20 lakh. The biggest Hollywood grosser in India that year was Spider-Man 3, which earned Rs 68 crore . A couple of years later, The Hurt Locker, a film about a bomb disposal unit in Iraq, won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The film, helmed by Kathryn Bigelow, also met the same fate at the Indian box office, earning just Rs 2 crore. That year, the biggest Hollywood flick in India was Avatar, which grossed Rs 110 crore. It remains the biggest Hollywood grosser of all time in India.

Avatar did win three Oscars, but all lesser ones, involving visual effects and cinematography. Those features, particularly the special effects, played a big role in its box office appeal.

With the exception of Avatar and Titanic, both directed by James Cameron, films that have won prestigious Academy Awards have not been very successful in India. Even Slumdog Millionaire , which had an all-Indian cast and a plot based entirely in India, did only moderately well, with box office takings of Rs 20 crore. The film did better outside India - it had worldwide gross earnings of $377 million.

"Awards don't matter at all at the Indian box office," says Komal Nahta, a film trade analyst. "The Oscar festivals conducted by multiplexes are a marketing gimmick. They want to stay in news. They know that they won't be able to get enough footfalls," she adds.

Kamal Gianchandani, President of PVR Pictures Ltd, the film production and distribution arm of the PVR Group, points at the lack of a commercial quotient in these films. "Movies such as the Harry Potter series or 2012 are highly commercial and cannot be compared to Oscar nominated movies. They are more visual-oriented," he says. 2012 was dubbed in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and is estimated to have grossed around Rs 90 crore.

Apart from Best Picture, the Best Actor and Best Actress awards are among the more coveted Oscars. These usually go to those who feature in biopics or dramas, and those do not always do well at the box office either. Recent Academy Award-winning biopics includeCapote, The Queen, Milk and The Iron Lady. This year, Lincoln is in the running. But it hasn't done too well so far; Lincoln has disappointed," says Faisal Farooqui, Founder-CEO, MouthShut.com, a review site. To date, the film has earned just Rs 1.25 crore in India. Incidentally, Lincoln is a co-production between the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance DreamWorks, Twentieth Century Fox and Amblin Entertainment. It has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards.

"Be it a local award or an international award, it doesn't matter. There is curiosity but the reach is limited. The majority of people look for entertainment," says Taran Adarsh, a film critic and trade analyst. "I would say that unless these (Oscar-winning) films have the required dramatic tadka for an Indian audience or have a setting closer home, with characters who can be identified, they will find the going tough in India," adds Farooqui.

Titanic, a film about the huge passenger ship that sank in April 1912 after crashing into an iceberg, had a lot of that "macula". The film, released in 1997, had a romantic plot weaved in, giving it a commercial appeal. It remains the highest grossing Best Picture winner in India, with gross collections of around Rs 52 crore.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has predicted that the global demand for ultra-luxury sports cars will fall this year, owing to the continuing European debt crisis and the slowdown of the Chinese economy. But their loss seems to be our gain. To compensate for falling sales in Europe and China, Lamborghini is now looking to expand in Asian markets and has opened a second dealership in India, where the number of millionaires are expected to more than double by 2015.

Another big announcement from the house of Lamborghini is its decision to cease production of its V10 Gallardo. Credited with reviving the brand after it was sold to the Volkswagen Group in 1998, the iconic Gallardo went on sale in 2003, racking up over 10,000 sales and making it the most popular Lamborghini of all time. It was on the streets, and extensively covered by popular media (even Akon rapped about it).

Although the model is as good as any of its contemporaries in terms of power and looks, the decision to discontinue production came after its Italian makers felt it was lagging in terms of technology. With a replacement already waiting in the wings, watch out for the new kid on the block.

About the Role and Responsibilities

Position: Software QA Engineer

Location: Bangalore, IN.

This position is for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) that will work on security products. The engineering team at McAfee is seeking a self-motivated QA engineer who is passionate about quality and innovation in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

· Work closely with onsite and offsite engineering teams in a high intensity, high bandwidth environment

· Work well with a remote development/QA team using your excellent written, verbal and organizational skills

· Work well with mainline projects owning components and thus requiring less supervision

· Owns the development and maintenance of part of complex test automation with the objective of developing high quality code using provided requirements.

· Design and implement test tools C/C++, C#

· Responsible for designing and developing automated tools or frameworks for highly optimized and effective test coverage.

· Acts as a key technical resource to members outside of the team on technical issues relating to their area of knowledge.

· Executes tests using automated tools. Peer reviews code changes to portions of the product source code.

· Utilize innovative test technologies to develop product’s testing strategy

· Perform debugging and troubleshooting in variety of local and remote testing environments.

Qualifications

Required Experience/Skills & Education:

1 to 4 years of hands-on experience as an SDET or automation engineer with demonstrated ability in the following areas:

· Experience programming in one or more of the following languages: C, C++, C#, Python, Perl

· Experience of configuration and management of networking infrastructures

· Experience with troubleshooting and root cause analysis

· Expertise in a commercial automation tools (e.g. QTP, Test Complete, Silk) or custom automation frameworks

· Strong verbal & written communication skills

· Detail-oriented, with strong organizational, analytical, and planning skills

· Able to prioritize and complete concurrent projects

· Excellent organizational skills with an ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a variety of demands

· Strong self-motivation and the ability to work as a team member

· Must be able to work in an environment of constant demands and frequent interruptions

· Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols at the application, transport, and internet layers

· BE or B.Tech . (preferably in Computer Science or related field)

Pluses:

· Knowledge of code coverage analysis tools

· Experience with virtual environment & Agile/Scrum engineering.

More than 20 Percent of Indians Malnourished

Bangalore: Over 20 percent of the population, which is about 212 million people, suffer from malnourishment in India. Well-known water expert and Tamil Nadu Planning Commission member P M Natarajan said the figure was taken from the latest estimates of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), reports M R Venkatesh for Deccan Herald.

Natarajan pointed out that 50 percent of the children in rural areas suffer from malnutrition, while 21 percent of the affected children suffer from “severe malnutrition.”

Talking of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals, Natarajan said “It will not be possible for India to achieve these goals without water and food security,” as reported by Deccan Herald.

Further, it was recently announced by Food Minister KV Thomas that India needs a 200 billion rupee top-up for its proposed food security bill, which is meant to ensure subsidised grain for the poor. The bill will be introduced in the budget session of Parliament on February 21.

Two-day strike to hit public transport, banking in India

   









NEW DELHI: Another massive all-India bandh on Wednesday and Thursday (February 20 and 21) is set to affect normal life in the country as public transport is set to stay off the roads and banks are also expected to remain closed for the two days. 

The two-day strike has been called by all the trade unions together against UPA government’s economic policies leading to price rise, disinvestment and contract labour. The other demands of the unions include implementaion of labour laws, putting an end to Special Economic Zones, filling up vacant posts in government jobs and withdrawal of foreign direct investment in the retail sector.

On Monday, trade union leaders met a four-member government committee comprising defence minister A K Antony, food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge. 

After the meeting, CITU president A K Padmanabhan was quoted as saying by Times of India, "The government has nothing to offer. We are going ahead with the strike. We expect it to be hugely successful."

Trade unions claim around 10 lakh bank employees will strike work in nearly 90,000 bank branches across the country.

Most bank unions are supporting the strike called by United Forum of Bank Unions consisting of nine national unions, including AIBEA, NCBE, BEFI, INBEF, NOBW and AIBOC in support of their demand. Branches of public sector banks are expected to be non-functional and cheque clearing activity will be hit.
