Tony Jaa Joins 'Fast and Furious 7'

Jaa, the Thai action star best known for his Ong Bak movies, is joining the heavy-duty cast of Fast and Furious 7, Universal’s newest installment of the hit franchise series.

Fast 7 already has Jason Statham as the villain, one of several new additions to a series that stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Ronda Rousey also is in talks to come in for a cameo.
The script is still being being written by longtime franchise player Chris Morgan, so details are sketchy and Jaa’s part in the international action pic remains unknown.

Jaa is a stuntman-turned-actor who spent his youth as an elephant herder. He watched martial arts movies and decided to follow in the footsteps of heroes Jackie Chan and Jet Li. He made three Ong Bak films, which were global hits, and is considered a symbol of national pride in his home country.

Fast 7 will be his English-language debut as well as his first studio picture."I have been a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise," said Jaa via e-mail from Thailand. "The films are fast-paced, fun and keep the audience involved. There is a great mix of humor and action, something I really appreciate. There is no better film to be involved in for a first U.S. studio production."

When asked if he was looking forward to going mano-a-mano with Diesel or Dwayne Johnson and, more importantly, who would win in a fight, Jaa responded, "Having a chance to work with Vin Diesel and The Rock already makes me a winner."James Wan, off the success of The Conjuring, is directing the movie, which will start shooting in September on an accelerated schedule to meet a July 11, 2014, release date.
Jaa is repped by Gersh, manager Mike Selby and attorney George Hayum.

Emraan Hashmi: Getting into acting is the laziest decision I've ever made

"This song is practically tribute to all men," remarked Emraan Hashmi during the launch of "Lazy Lad" song of 'Ghanchakkar' took place recently. Keeping in tune with the theme of the song and much to the amusement of the media, the film's lead pair - Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi - turned up dressed in their film's characters.

Vidya bowled over everyone by playing her part well as a boisterous Punjabi housewife, wearing colourful attire and making tongue-in-cheek remarks. Contrary to her, Emraan graced the event as the typical husband, dressed in polka-dotted red nightwear.

After giving a small skit prior to the press meet, the team (including director Raj Kumar Gupta) interacted with media, with discussion revolving around the "lazy" factors in the actors and other topics.

Giving out an interesting secret, Emraan revealed that he is very lazy person and he joined the film industry only out of laziness. "Obviously I chose this profession; because I thought it will be easy. It was a lazy move of mine. But it didn't turn out very well," remarked Emraan and added, "I realised that acting has lot of work; but I had to stick by. So my career decision of being an actor was a very lazy decision."

He admitted that before joining films, he had a very casual outlook towards the acting profession. "I used to watch films and say yeah that's easy - just get on the sets, say dialogues and leave. But now here I'm and it's all hard work. That's the Laziest decision I've ever made," stated Emraan who went on to say that he looks for shortcuts in anything.

'Ghanchakkar' is slated to release on 28th June.

A Film Go Goa Gone earns "A" Certificate and the team was very happy...

He wanted it, he got it. 10 days back Saif Ali Khan had expressed a desire for Go Goa Gone getting an 'A' certificate for itself. His wish has indeed come true as Censors have gladly handed over an 'A' certificate to the film so that it reaches out only to its target audience, the mature kind, which watches zombies along with naughty elements for all the fun that they come along with.

"I am very happy that we have been fairly censored," says Saif who has produced the film along with Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla, "We are now managing to show the movie as-is for what it's worth. We didn't have to mellow down the content and in the process perhaps alienate our target audience."

This is a sentiment that is shared by Raj of the director duo Raj-D.K. "We are very happy that we get to showcase the film in its original form. What's the fun in watching a zombie film if the cool parts are cut out," he smiles.

The makers had in fact presented the film to the Censors for the 'A' certificate and are glad that the film was passed without any cuts. "In any case, zombies naturally lend themselves to an A rating. But all the A rated parts in the film are actually in good humour and done in good 'taste'," adds Raj.

Kunal Khemu, one of the leads in the film, further reveals that the language bit had played its role in the film's final cut as well. "That's true," he says, "Other than the zombie genre, it is also the language that we were conscious about. We were going for an 'A' certificate anyways and I think its fair we have got one."

D.K. adds, "I am quite happy with the decision of the censors. This was always intended to be an A rated film. What fun in a zombie film if it's too clean? (smiles) The humor and other A rated elements in the film are done very tastefully and not meant to be offensive. Adults can have some unbridled fun and entertainment. Leave the kids at home."

Saif has the final word here, "I am happy that Censors have allowed us everything and given us the right certificate. It gives us hope and scope to make more movies!"

Guess with the team itself asking for it, for a change Censors had a relatively easier task in hand than getting into numerous rounds or arguments and counter arguments.

No Country for Oscars Winning an Academy Award rarely gives a film a revenue bump in India

In 2008, No Country for Old Men, a film directed by the Coen brothers, Ethan and Joel, won the Best Picture Academy Award. The Academy Awards recognise excellence in films released during the previous year. The film, a dark and absorbing tale about a fortune, a busted drug deal, and a hitman, won three other Oscars: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. With that kind of pedigree, it should have done well at the Indian box office.

Instead, it earned a mere Rs 20 lakh. The biggest Hollywood grosser in India that year was Spider-Man 3, which earned Rs 68 crore . A couple of years later, The Hurt Locker, a film about a bomb disposal unit in Iraq, won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. The film, helmed by Kathryn Bigelow, also met the same fate at the Indian box office, earning just Rs 2 crore. That year, the biggest Hollywood flick in India was Avatar, which grossed Rs 110 crore. It remains the biggest Hollywood grosser of all time in India.

Avatar did win three Oscars, but all lesser ones, involving visual effects and cinematography. Those features, particularly the special effects, played a big role in its box office appeal.

With the exception of Avatar and Titanic, both directed by James Cameron, films that have won prestigious Academy Awards have not been very successful in India. Even Slumdog Millionaire , which had an all-Indian cast and a plot based entirely in India, did only moderately well, with box office takings of Rs 20 crore. The film did better outside India - it had worldwide gross earnings of $377 million.

"Awards don't matter at all at the Indian box office," says Komal Nahta, a film trade analyst. "The Oscar festivals conducted by multiplexes are a marketing gimmick. They want to stay in news. They know that they won't be able to get enough footfalls," she adds.

Kamal Gianchandani, President of PVR Pictures Ltd, the film production and distribution arm of the PVR Group, points at the lack of a commercial quotient in these films. "Movies such as the Harry Potter series or 2012 are highly commercial and cannot be compared to Oscar nominated movies. They are more visual-oriented," he says. 2012 was dubbed in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and is estimated to have grossed around Rs 90 crore.
Apart from Best Picture, the Best Actor and Best Actress awards are among the more coveted Oscars. These usually go to those who feature in biopics or dramas, and those do not always do well at the box office either. Recent Academy Award-winning biopics includeCapote, The Queen, Milk and The Iron Lady. This year, Lincoln is in the running. But it hasn't done too well so far; Lincoln has disappointed," says Faisal Farooqui, Founder-CEO, MouthShut.com, a review site. To date, the film has earned just Rs 1.25 crore in India. Incidentally, Lincoln is a co-production between the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance DreamWorks, Twentieth Century Fox and Amblin Entertainment. It has been nominated for 12 Academy Awards.

"Be it a local award or an international award, it doesn't matter. There is curiosity but the reach is limited. The majority of people look for entertainment," says Taran Adarsh, a film critic and trade analyst. "I would say that unless these (Oscar-winning) films have the required dramatic tadka for an Indian audience or have a setting closer home, with characters who can be identified, they will find the going tough in India," adds Farooqui.

Titanic, a film about the huge passenger ship that sank in April 1912 after crashing into an iceberg, had a lot of that "macula". The film, released in 1997, had a romantic plot weaved in, giving it a commercial appeal. It remains the highest grossing Best Picture winner in India, with gross collections of around Rs 52 crore.

Lawrence in midst of controversy

Raghava Lawrence is in the midst of a controversy.  The reason is, needless to say, Rebel, which has got him the highest number of brickbats since he was born.  First, Prabhas' fans cursed him because they believed that the film was getting unduly delayed due to his nakhras.  After the release, critics slammed his appalling creativity.

Now, it is the turn of the film's two producers, J Bagawan and J Pulla Rao, to slug it out with him.  They have approached the Producers' Council, complaining that Lawrence did not honour his commitment.  What is it?  He agreed to complete the film at the agreed cost of Rs. 22.5 cr.  However, once the film went on the floors, its cost soared and soared without respite.  Sometime in mid-2012, the producers proudly stated that Rebel's budget is Rs. 40 cr.

They might have hoped for spectacular collections, but the film has received a lukewarm response from Day 3.  It is now the case of the two producers that Lawrence should owe the responsibility for not honouring the agreement and being the cause of the inflated budget.

On his part, Lawrence took his own grouse to the Directors' Association.  He has his own grievance: The producers sold off the dubbing rights by going against the terms of the agreement dealing with  it.  They had agreed to sell the rights to Lawrence.

Nayanthara bags the prestigious Nandi Awards

The glamour queen of south Indian cinema’s transition to the Sita one of the most revered characters in Hindu mythology was a shock to everyone and today you think of the Hindu calendar gods and you might find Nayanthara’s face there. She has the face of an Indian Goddess.
There is something about Nayanthara that makes you stop and take notice of her. Unlike her contemporaries she neither had a sugar-daddy as mentor nor did she have a film maker as her best buddy to offer her films on a platter. She simply made use of her opportunities and the mythological Sri Ramarajyam not only won box-office success, critical acclaim and country’s eight biggest awards.
She could easily play a glamourous Sasha (in Billa) or Sita all at once. She is South Indian cinema’s answer to Marilyn Monroe and Madhubala. She extremely beautiful and has an air of mystery. And mystery is always beautiful. Her happiness knows no bounds and after hearing the news of bagging the Nandi awards, and she spoke Sridevi Sreedhar. Excerpts from a heart-to-heart chat..

What are the names of three people that come into your mind after you heard the news of winning a Nandi Awards?(Smiles) The three faces that pops up are Balakrishna sir, director Bapu sir and producer Yalamanchali Sai Babu. I would not have done this film, if not for Balakrishna sir. When I was not signing any new film, he called me up and gave me confidence to take it up. The fact that he even told me that if I am not doing it, then he will keep it in the backburner and start work, when I’m ready! That is something no big actor will say, considering the fact that there are dime a dozen girls in the industry. That one line of his touched me and I decided to do it. I have to thank my producers and director who believed in me, the entire unit members and my good friends who stood by me.
We all know that Sri Ramarajyam is very close to your heart....
It not only close to my heart but I feel blessed to do such a character in my life. Nandi is my eight awards this year for Sri Ramarajyam. I don’t think there’s more that I can ask God. Looking back, I think I was destined to role of Sita and there was no grand plan that this is the goal for the year. And it’s not even that I went out looking to do a film in such a genre.
I was going thorough a difficult phase in my life and it’s my good fortune that Balakrishna sir instigated confidence and believed that I would fit into the role of Sita.  Working with a living legend like Bapu sir was like a dream come true for me and he gave me so much freedom. Producer Sai Babu made this film not aiming at box-office success but it was his dream as an ardent devotee of Lord Rama to make this film.

Did you relalise during the making of the film that the movie was heading to towards becoming a landmark one in your career?
Yes, I knew that Sri Ramarajyam will be a special film for me. There was positive vibes throughout the making of the film . Bapu sir handled my role with care and affection and I gave my best.
You have been touted as the woman for all seasons. How do you view yourself?
I do not consider myself anything like that! I fact, I wake up everyday look at myself in the mirror and thank God for everything in life. I am like the weatherwoman. I venture out to play come rain or sunshine. Work is not a chore for me. It’s my calling. I would be nothing without it. My passion for the art is enough to push me out of bed every day.
