Our Entreprenuers want ??

The inadequacies of Indian startup ecosystem are no surprise to anyone. For the most enigmatic stories that we hear about entrepreneurship – of the Google’s, the Facebook’s or the Apple’s – originate from a country with only one-third the population as India but with a formidable startup eco-system. The difference has a larger implication. It means India has three times the number of potential entrepreneurs or the number of people who can ultimately benefit from the entrepreneurial innovations. Yet none of these numbers count without a vital missing link – the startup ecosystem. Our’s is a unique country with a billion people, who are culturally diverse. And with most of these people still living below the poverty line, their needs are different from people of the other countries. This is why indigenous entrepreneurs have a better chance of changing the Indian economic landscape. All of this needs an eco-system, may be unique in nature, given the nature of entrepreneurial ventures it has to incubate.

Entrepreneurs and the rare yet increasing species of VCs understand the inadequacies. Last few years have seen a number of startup incubators and collaboration platforms come up. Many of these are connecting the entrepreneurial community to each other closely. Some events are connecting the entrepreneurs to VCs, some are connecting the entrepreneurs to mentors and some are connecting the entrepreneurs to other like-minded entrepreneurs. While all of these connections are required, some of these are more important than others.

The connections that join the entrepreneurs to the VCs may seem most important but are not. Before a startup can even become an opportunity worth an investment, it has to reach a level of capacity. The capacity doesn’t come from money alone. It comes from the team that works behind the venture and also by the mentors who provide critical growth knowledge.

A number of entrepreneurs to whom I spoke reiterated the same point. Yash KS, CTO at the Red Force Labs – a startup, forcefully drove home the point that the level of mentoring in India is both superficial and of low quality. Not the broad level challenges but the tactical level challenges emerge as daunting roadblock for the ventures, requiring mentoring support. Most mentorship programmes are fleeting in nature and fail to provide an engaged mentorship support.

Myshkin Ingavale – founder of a biomedical focused startup also expressed the lack of good mentoring available in India. He emphasised that the informal discussions and interactions over an extended period of time with fellow entrepreneurs is a great way to improve the quality of startups and therefore community based learning is very crucial.

Of late a number of new startup platforms have emerged in India that focus on such needs of entrepreneurs. One such event, I attended last week had a similar taste. A number of entrepreneurs converged here to brainstorm ideas and develop prototypes. The participants picked their own teams and worked over the weekend to showcase their works into the grand finale. The idea is not to actually create products but to increase community interactions between entrepreneurs. Many people were also looking to find the co-founders for a new idea.

Among the many entrepreneurs I met was a Czech couple. The two were trying to perfect their idea of customised food ordering ‘Tasty Carrots’ with Indian entrepreneurs. The couple will finally implement the idea in Czechoslovakia. Some teams were developing apps, some came up with online retail platforms and another one focused on a low cost sanitation for the poor. Pankaj Jain, organiser of the Startup Weekend India who has worked with startup communities extensively, felt that this is the way forward for Indian startup community. Globally the startup communities thrive on such platforms, integrating and building their capacities through such informal networks.

This kind of crosspollination of ideas and talents at a community level is a vital yet under-served need in the Indian entrepreneur eco-system. While startup capital is a daunting challenge for Indian entrepreneurs, an under developed eco-system will only make that challenge even more insurmountable.

World Bank on Tuesday scaled down India's growth

World Bank on Tuesday scaled down India's growth forecast to 6.1 percent for the current fiscal from 7 percent projected six months ago.

The decline in the growth forecast is largely due to the decline in agriculture sector which is expected to grow at 2 percent during 2013-14 against the previous estimate of 2.7 percent despite normal monsoon projection.

However, the multi-lateral funding agency said that India is regaining economic momentum and growth is expected to recover gradually to its high long-term potential.

As per the latest India Development Update of the World Bank, Indian economy would grow by 6.1 percent in 2013-14 on account of robust domestic demand, strong savings and investment rate.

Growth projections for 2013-14 have been arrived at by taking into account present internal and external factors. "Economic growth is likely to accelerate to over 6 percent during the current financial year (April 2013-March 2014). Growth is expected to increase further to 6.7 percent in 2014-2015," said Denis Medvedev, Senior Country Economist, World Bank, India.

"Recent data point to some improvements in economic activity, inflation and trade deficit, came down in recent months, while private consumption and investment growth had accelerated in the third quarter of 2012-2013," he said.

According to the Update, a twice yearly report on the Indian economy and its prospects, GDP growth during 2012-13 would be around 5 percent, lowest in the decade.

As per the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report released on Monday India's GDP is likely to improve to 5.7 percent during year ending December 2013 and further to 6.2 percent a year after

Petrol Prices hiked 3rs per litre

New Delhi: In a relief to common man, petrol price was on Tuesday cut by Rs 3 per litre, effective from midnight.

Following the revised prices, the petrol in Delhi will now cost at Rs 63.09 per litre. The latest rate cut has come in line with the decline in international oil prices.

This is the third reduction in the petrol rates in the month of April. Petrol price was last cut by Rs 1 per litre on April 15. Earlier petrol rate was slashed by 85 paise a litre on April 2.

The revised prices of petrol in four metros will be as follows: Delhi Rs 63.09 per litre, Mumbai Rs 69.73 per litre, Kolkata Rs 70.35 per litre and Chennai Rs 65.90 per litre.

Announcing the reduction, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation's largest fuel retailer, said that since the last price change, international prices have declined from USD 116.61 per barrel to USD 107 a barrel.

Rupee-US dollar exchange rate too improved from Rs 54.51 to a US dollar to Rs 54.26. "Thus, it has been decided to pass on the benefit to customers and accordingly the aforesaid reduction in the retail selling price of petrol is being affected," an IOC statement said.

Google has apparently rethought a change to its Chrome browser

Google has apparently rethought a change to its Chrome browser that had users up in arms and has restored an older design of its popular New Tab Page in the newest beta of Chrome 27.

Users were overwhelmingly against a revision of Chrome's New Tab Page (NTP) that debuted in Chrome 27 in early April. The new NTP reduced the number of thumbnails of recently visited websites from eight to four, inserted a large Google search box, shifted the Web apps view to a new button near the top of the browser window, and dumped other features, including the ability to view recently closed tabs, from the NTP.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Google adds IT admin features for Chrome browser. | Discover what's new in business applications with InfoWorld's Technology: Applications newsletter. | The Web browser is your portal to the world -- as well as the conduit that lets in many security threats. Learn how to secure your Web browsers in InfoWorld's "Web Browser Security Deep Dive" PDF guide. ]

Google announced the NTP redesign in December, when it began replacing the existing page in the "Dev" channel, the least-polished of the three builds it maintains for each edition. On April 4, it pushed the revision to the beta of Chrome 27.

Comments on various Google blogs and product discussion forums were almost universally negative from the start.

"First upgrade in 2 years I want to roll back," said Gerry Fitzgerald in a comment appended to the December blog. "Horrid. Rigid. At least let me pick which links and apps I want on the [new tab] page and give me more than 4!!!"

Google argued that the changes were necessary, that many users, not realizing they could search from Chrome's Omnibox -- Google's name for the combined address bar and search field -- steered instead for google.com to initiate a search. "The goal is to save people time by helping them search and navigate the Web faster," contended Chrome software engineer David Holloway, in the December announcement.

Then this month, Gideon Wald of Google, who was monitoring the feedback discussions and occasionally weighing in, essentially told the disgruntled to get used to the new NTP. "We do recognize that power users will be frustrated by some aspects of this change," Wald wrote April 19. "But we know you'll be able to adapt your workflows; you are the population that's willing to learn."

That didn't sit well with Yuri Tzur. "We could also adapt to a new browser," Tzur countered. "If we're supposed to be the ones to test it, I think our feedback should be taken into consideration instead of being dismissed."

Users told Google in no uncertain terms that they hated the new look of Chrome's New Tab Page. Google has apparently heard the outcries, and restored the old design.

Users hammered Google over the change most loudly in a long thread where Google asked for comments on the new NTP. There they argued that the move was a sop to novices at the expense of experienced Chrome users, that the large Google search box was redundant when the Omnibox was available, and that access to Web apps had been demoted to a button.

Flash Pendrives prices are falling down

If you decided to save the money and go for the smaller 64GB solid-state drive on that new tablet, anticipating that USB memory prices were headed south, you made a very good decision. Brand-name 128GB USB flash drives are now priced at $85, and they seem poised to go lower.

You can buy a Surface Pro with a 128GB SSD for $999 (plus the cover). Or you can buy a Surface Pro with a 64GB SSD and stick another 128GB of memory in your (only) USB slot -- a total of 192GB of storage -- for a grand total of $985.

Consider the fate of the ubiquitous SanDisk Cruzer Glide 128GB USB 2.0 drive -- not fast, but huge. It launched last June at a (perhaps fanciful) price of $170. Staples ran a year-end very-limited-time special at $51, then raised the price back up to $130. NewEgg dropped the price to $99.50 about a month ago, and it's staying there. Amazon lowered the price to $85 a few weeks ago. Tiger Direct lists it at $109. Lesser-known retailers go as low as $77.

Then there's the roughly analogous Kingston Data Traveler 128GB USB 2.0 drive. Part of the venerable DT-101 series, NewEgg has listed it at $100 for the past month. Amazon just nudged it up from $83 to $85 today (no doubt somebody noticed the price of the SanDisk); Tiger Direct has it at $85 as well.

That works out to 66 cents per gigabyte -- roughly the same price-per-gigabyte as 64GB USB drives and cheaper than 32GB drives. All of a sudden, 128GB USB flash drives have become the cheapest alternative for flash storage.

What's happening? While the market for DRAM has slowed, demand for NAND flash memory continues to increase at a heady rate.

As demand for DRAM slows, production of DRAM is also declining -- faster. The average wholesale price of DRAM increased 13 percent between January 2012 and January 2013. Agam Shah at IDG News puts it this way:

[DRAM m]emory makers have been spending less on capital equipment and the output of memory has declined to meet the slowdown in demand. As the market adjusts, it is likely that supply will fall to the point where demand is higher, resulting in price stabilization.

The situation in the NAND flash market is just the opposite:

[T]he price for nonvolatile NAND flash memory is expected to fall... The NAND flash supply currently exceeds demand, but the growing markets for smartphones and tablets could change that. So, manufacturers are ramping up on NAND flash to keep up with demand.

As manufacturers ramp up NAND flash production, the price goes down.

Unlike DRAM prices, I don't see USB flash drive prices going up any time soon. Patience should be rewarded, if you can stand to wait.

Kingdom tower in Saudi Arabia - the world's tallest building when completed.

The British company that built the Shard skyscraper in London will manage the construction of the Kingdom tower in Saudi Arabia, which will be the world's tallest building when completed.

Mace, which also played a part in building the London Eye and renovating Oxford's Ashmolean Museum, has been appointed by the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC) to jointly oversee the £780m project with EC Harris, a British-based construction consultancy.

Exactly how far the Kingdom tower will rise above the sands of the Arabian desert near Jeddah is still a closely guarded secret, but JEC said it will be taller than the 830 metre Burj Khalifa, currently the world's tallest building. The company also said it would be four times as high as the 310 metre Shard, meaning it could top out at about 1,200 metres.

The Saudi Binladin group will begin construction later this year and the project should be completed in winter 2018.

The Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal unveiled the plans, by American firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, 18 months ago as part of a new £13bn Kingdom City development on the Red Sea coast to the north of Jeddah.

The chief executive of JEC, Waleed Abdul Jaleel Batterjee, said: "The vision of constructing the tallest tower in the world in Jeddah belongs to HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. His vision is also that the project itself will set the world's sights on our beloved Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the project will help create hundreds of jobs for our Saudi countrymen."

He told Building magazine that Mace was chosen because it was "going to use the same team that was on the Shard".

With a total construction area of more than 500,000 sq m, the Kingdom tower will include a five-star hotel, luxury flats, office space and the world's highest observatory, with breathtaking views of the Red Sea and the al-Sawarat mountains to the east.

Oil-rich Saudi Arabia has growing housing demands and is planning to spend about £260bn on infrastructure projects to meet its needs over the next five years.

Jeddah is the country's second largest city, with a population of 4 million. It has long complained of being neglected in favour of the capital, Riyadh, and recently had its bid to turn the old city into a Unesco world heritage site turned down.

Mark Reynolds, chief executive of Mace, said: "Kingdom tower is a project of international importance and immense ambition and we are delighted to be part of the team tasked with its delivery. As the client's project manager, I am confident we will deliver a development exemplary in innovation and approach."

A Film Go Goa Gone earns "A" Certificate and the team was very happy...

He wanted it, he got it. 10 days back Saif Ali Khan had expressed a desire for Go Goa Gone getting an 'A' certificate for itself. His wish has indeed come true as Censors have gladly handed over an 'A' certificate to the film so that it reaches out only to its target audience, the mature kind, which watches zombies along with naughty elements for all the fun that they come along with.

"I am very happy that we have been fairly censored," says Saif who has produced the film along with Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla, "We are now managing to show the movie as-is for what it's worth. We didn't have to mellow down the content and in the process perhaps alienate our target audience."

This is a sentiment that is shared by Raj of the director duo Raj-D.K. "We are very happy that we get to showcase the film in its original form. What's the fun in watching a zombie film if the cool parts are cut out," he smiles.

The makers had in fact presented the film to the Censors for the 'A' certificate and are glad that the film was passed without any cuts. "In any case, zombies naturally lend themselves to an A rating. But all the A rated parts in the film are actually in good humour and done in good 'taste'," adds Raj.

Kunal Khemu, one of the leads in the film, further reveals that the language bit had played its role in the film's final cut as well. "That's true," he says, "Other than the zombie genre, it is also the language that we were conscious about. We were going for an 'A' certificate anyways and I think its fair we have got one."

D.K. adds, "I am quite happy with the decision of the censors. This was always intended to be an A rated film. What fun in a zombie film if it's too clean? (smiles) The humor and other A rated elements in the film are done very tastefully and not meant to be offensive. Adults can have some unbridled fun and entertainment. Leave the kids at home."

Saif has the final word here, "I am happy that Censors have allowed us everything and given us the right certificate. It gives us hope and scope to make more movies!"

Guess with the team itself asking for it, for a change Censors had a relatively easier task in hand than getting into numerous rounds or arguments and counter arguments.

Engineers, Beware! Tech Industry's Darkest Secret Revealed

A dark secret that run undercurrent through tech world has been revealed, and it is all about age. If you are middle-aged, do coding to make a living, and get a six-figure salary, then you’re headed for the unemployment route. Your market value declines as you age and it becomes harder and harder to get a job, says Vivek Wadhwa, Fellow, Arthur & Toni Rembe Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University and a Columnist at The Washington Post.

The harsh reality may provoke anger, outrage, and denial, but this is the way tech industry runs and it is similar to the military, which is an “up or out” profession. And it’s as competitive as professional sports. Engineers need to be prepared.

The employers do not discuss the fact openly, for they may be accused of age discrimination. Nevertheless, the research lead by University of California, Berkeley, professors Clair Brown and Greg Linden shows that even those with masters degrees and Ph.Ds have reason to worry. The research on Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census data for the semiconductor industry revealed that although salaries increased dramatically for engineers in their 30s, these increases slowed after the age of 40. After 50, the mean salary fell by 17 percent for those with bachelors degrees and by 14 percent for those with masters degrees and Ph.Ds. And salary increases for holders of postgraduate degrees were always lower than for those with bachelor’s degrees, indicating there’s no long term job security for the higher degree holders.
